Flats Fishing Frenzy: Red Snapper Triumph in St. Petersburg

I kicked off a fantastic trip with Thenna for our Mate's Fee Only Card Shared trip with SRS Adventures in St. Petersburg. May's a great time for flats fishing here, with the waters warming up and fish getting more active. We met up at 1:00 am, which is early, but it's worth it to beat the heat and get the best bite. The weather was partly cloudy, with a chance of strong storms later, but that didn't slow us down one bit.

We hit the flats and got right to it with some sight fishing. The water was great, making it easy to spot the fish. We mixed it up with some flipping and pitching, and even tried some wacky rigging to see what would work best. Thenna was on point, following directions and making some great casts. It wasn't long before we hooked into a nice Red Snapper. That fish put up a good fight, but Thenna played it perfectly. When we finally got it in the boat, it measured a solid 23 inches - a real beauty!

As the day went on, we kept at it, trying different spots and techniques. The partly cloudy sky actually worked in our favor, giving us some breaks from the sun without totally killing the bite. We had to keep an eye on those potential storms, but they held off long enough for us to get in a full day of fishing. Even when the fish weren't biting, just being out on the water and showing Thenna the ropes of flats fishing was a blast.
