I had a great day out on the flats with Kumar for our Mate's Fee Only Card Shared trip with SRS Adventures. May is a fantastic time for flats fishing in St. Petersburg, with warmer waters bringing in more baitfish and gamefish to the shallows. We met up at 1:00 AM, which gave us plenty of time to get out to some prime spots before sunrise. The weather was perfect - clear conditions throughout the day, and the water looked great for sight fishing.
We tried a variety of techniques to entice the fish. I showed Kumar how to work different lures and baits, and we switched things up as we moved around the flats. Though we didn't manage to land any big prize, we still had a great time out on the water, enjoying the scenery and good company. The clear conditions made for some excellent visibility, and we spotted plenty of activity in the water even if the fish weren't biting.
Despite the slow fishing, it was still a solid day on the water. We covered a lot of ground, trying different spots and tactics. Kumar picked up the techniques quickly, and I'm sure with a bit more luck, we'd have been onto some fish. That's just how it goes sometimes in fishing - you can do everything right and still come up empty-handed. But the experience of being out there, learning the water, and honing your skills is always valuable.
