Flats Fishing Adventure: Sights and Skills on St. Pete's Waters

I had a great day out on the flats with am on our Mate's Fee Only Card Shared trip with SRS Adventures in St. Petersburg. May is a fantastic time for flats fishing in Florida, as the waters warm up and the fish become more active. We met up at 1:00 AM, which gave us plenty of time to get out to the best spots before sunrise. The weather was perfect - clear conditions throughout the day, and the water was great for sight fishing.

We tried a variety of techniques to entice the fish. I showed am how to work different lures and baits, and we spent time sight casting in the shallow waters. The clear conditions made it easier to spot fish, but they were being a bit shy. We saw some good-sized fish cruising the flats, but they weren't in a biting mood. That's just how it goes sometimes in fishing - the fish don't always cooperate!

Even though we didn't land any fish, we had a blast out there. The flats were teeming with life - we saw plenty of baitfish, some rays gliding by, and even a few dolphins in the distance. I shared some tips and tricks for reading the water and spotting fish, which am picked up quickly. It's always fun to see someone get excited about learning new fishing skills, even on a slower day.
