I had a great day out on the flats with Soundarya from SRS Adventures. We kicked off our Mate's Fee Only Card Shared trip at 1:00 am in St. Petersburg, Florida. May is a fantastic time for flats fishing here, with warmer waters bringing in more baitfish and predators to the shallows. The weather was perfect - clear conditions all day, which made spotting fish a lot easier. The water was great too, nice and calm, just what you want for this kind of fishing.
We tried out a variety of techniques throughout the day. That's the beauty of flats fishing - you've got to be ready to switch things up depending on what the fish are doing. We started with some sight casting, looking for those tell-tale signs of fish movement in the shallow water. Then we moved on to some drift fishing, letting the boat move naturally with the current while we worked different areas. We even tried some fly fishing later on, which is always a fun challenge on the flats.
Though we didn't manage to land any big prize, but we still had a great time out on the water, enjoying the scenery and good company. That's just how fishing goes sometimes. We saw plenty of activity - baitfish jumping, a few larger fish swirling just out of reach. It was a good reminder that there's always more to fishing than just catching fish. The calm water, the clear skies, and the chance to be out there trying different techniques - it all adds up to a solid day in my book.
